Ulysses S. GrantFiling: Dec 30 1885 - New York, United States
Ulysses S. Grant was an American general and statesman widely regarded as the Union's greatest commander and the architect of victory in the Civil War. He secured pivotal victories at Fort Donelson and Vicksburg, the latter splitting the Confederacy in two, and in April 1865 he accepted General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox, bringing the war to its close. As the eighteenth President of the United States, he became a determined defender of civil rights, championing the Fifteenth Amendment and enforcing the law against the Ku Klux Klan to protect newly freed African Americans. In his final year he completed his celebrated personal memoirs, which endure as one of the finest autobiographies in American letters.
